Economic Sectors - Transport - Traffic accidents: Friday the 13th is a Friday like any other - Federal Statistical Office (Destatis)

Friday the 13th is said to be a day that brings more misfortune than other days. However, the data of the road traffic accident statistics do not confirm this. In 2015, an average of 829 personal injury accidents involving 1,103 casualties happened on German roads on the three Fridays that coincided with the 13th day of a month. On the other Fridays, there were 966 accidents, on average, and the number of casualties amounted to 1,259. Thus Friday the 13th was even less dangerous than other Fridays in 2015.

However, Friday is generally the day of the week when most accidents happen because the traffic volume is particularly high. For example, many commuters drive home for the weekend on Fridays and more vacationists and excursionists are on the roads. On the other days of the week the number of accidents is markedly lower. In 2015, an average of 817 accidents occurred per day, in which 1,060 people were killed or injured.
