Minister Gabriel: Germany helps Jordan restructure its energy sector

2016-10-07 15:17:47

Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, and Nasser Judeh, Jordans Minister of Foreign Affairs, have signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on the Establishment of an Energy Dialogue between Germany and Jordan in the presence of Jordans King Abdullah II.

Federal Minister Gabriel said: "Jordan is making an enormous contribution to tackling the refugee crisis in the region. We acknowledge this with great respect. The energy dialogue between Germany and Jordan aims to contribute to intensifying the cooperation between our two countries in a different policy field, advancing the modernisation of Jordans energy sector and working closer together in the fields of energy and energy efficiency. Energy consumption in Jordan will continue to rise in the coming years due to the countrys growing population. Therefore it is important for Jordan to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and to make its energy market more attractive for foreign companies."

Jordan meets about 95 % of its energy demand by importing fuels (gas, oil). The costs account for around one quarter of the countrys GDP. In the coming years, Jordans energy consumption will rise by 5-6 % p.a. due to the refugee crisis and the growing population. Therefore the German Federal Government will provide advice to Jordan in the fields of renewable energies and energy efficiency.

The Energy Export Initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy aims to intensify cooperation between German small and medium-sized enterprises offering climate-friendly technologies and Jordanian energy companies. The Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministy for the Environment, Nature Conversation, Building and Nuclear Safety and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development are also involved.
