Transatlantic Energy Transition Dialogue - State Secretary Rainer Baake visiting the U.S.

2016-09-16 09:45:18

Rainer Baake, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, embarked on a journey to the United States of America on Sunday. He is visiting California, Washington, D.C. and New York City. His visit aims to share experiences on the energy transitions in Germany and the U.S. Closer cooperation in the fields of energy and climate is to be agreed upon during meetings with Jerry Brown, Governor of California, and Richard Kauffman, Chairman for Energy of the State of New York.

State Secretary Baake said: "At the beginning of September, the U.S. ratified the Paris Climate Agreement, thus committing itself to pursuing an ambitious climate policy. California and the State of New York, two of the strongest U.S. states in economic terms, are striving to reach ambitious climate and energy policy targets just like us in Germany. I want to discuss with representatives of these states and with the U.S. Administration what Germany and the U.S. can do to set a new investment standard. We must now create the right energy policy environment to avoid foreseeable misallocated investments. We intend to replace fossil fuels, that is oil, coal and gas, with energy efficiency technologies and renewable energies."

Further highlights include attending the VERGE 16 Conference in Santa Clara, CA, visiting innovative energy start-ups in Silicon Valley, and meeting with high-ranking representatives of the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.
