The United States and the EU have been deliberating the exact terms and conditions of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) since summer 2013. Currently the publication of internal documents which show the state of negotiations between the parties is drawing much attention.
In 2015 the United States were Germanys most important trading partner. According to provisional results, goods to the total value of 173.4 billion euros were traded between the two countries. France, which had always been Germanys number one trading partner in the past four decades, ranked second (170.0 billion euros).
In 2015, Germany exported goods to the total value of 114.0 billion euros to the United States. Among the most important export goods were motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (34.1 billion euros), machinery (17.7 billion euros) and pharmaceutical products (13.5 billion euros). Imports of American goods amounted to 59.4 billion euros. The main import goods were computers, electronic and optical products (8.0 billion euros).
